The Hon Martin Ferguson AM MP. The Minister for Resources and Energy, Martin Ferguson AM MP, has welcomed a new report showing the energy intensity of the Australian economy fell 1.1 per cent annually throughout the past two decades a rate in line with other OECD economies. Funded by the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism and compiled by ABARE, End Use Energy Intensity in the Australian Economy shows end use energy intensity declines between 1989-90 and 2006-07 have resulted in significant savings in energy consumption.

'End use energy intensity in the Australian economy has been declining over the past 17 years, resulting in savings in energy consumption,' said Dr Terry Sheales, Deputy Executive Director, ABARE, on releasing the report End use energy intensity in the Australian economy. Energy intensity is defined as the ratio of energy consumption to the level of economic output. 'Improvements in energy efficiency have played a key role in limiting increases in energy consumption.

'The increase in planned capital expenditure reflects expectations of growing demand for minerals and energy commodities in the medium term,' said ABARE's Deputy Executive Director, Dr Terry Sheales on releasing ABARE's Minerals and energy: major development projects - October 2009 listing. The listing of 341 major development projects includes 267 projects at a less advanced stage, that is, projects undergoing feasibility studies or approval processes. In the six months to October 2009, 44 new projects have been added to ABARE's list of development projects.

This was revealed in the ABARE report Electricity generation: major development projects - October 2009 listing released today by Dr Terry Sheales, Deputy Executive Director, ABARE. Of the nine renewable electricity generation projects listed at an advanced stage of development in October 2009, eight were wind powered projects and one was a hydro project. 'The number of wind projects at advanced and less advanced stages of development demonstrates the potential of wind energy to add significant renewable electricity generation capacity to the electricity grid,' Dr Sheales noted.
